The Jakarta Regional Development Centre held an International
Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Team Management Seminar from July 12
to 15 in the Jakarta Regional Development Center (RDC) at Madya Athletics
Stadium in the Bung Karno Sports Complex, Central Jakarta.
The course,
led by Maurice Nicholas of Singapore and Prema P. as lecturers, was aimed to
provide team managers with basic skills and knowledge when leading a team to a
field and track competition.
In the introduction session, participants
were given a list of World Competitions and were asked to identify which
competitions belong to the IAAF and AAA series.
Participants were then
divided into three groups and each discussed various issues ranging from roles
and competencies for team managers to leadership skills.
On more
technical sessions, participants also discussed contents of the competition
technical handbook as well as discussing check lists for managers. These
sessions included what have to be prepared before, during and after a track and
field competition.
It seem that travel documents became the main issues
as Groups A, B and C put in their pre-departure, departure and arrival
checklists.
In addition, Group A, which discussed the pre-departure
checklist, included team collection , travel itinerary and transportation issues
in the checklist.
Group B added to its departure checklist team head
count and arrangements at the airport and on board the airplane (when
flying).
Meanwhile, Group C stressed on head count, accreditation and
arrangements of transportation, meal and lodging into its arrival checklist. The
group also reminded the importance of reconfirming return tickets and
transport.
Also discussed was the conflict management and resolution
session in which participants expressed experiences on the conflicts or any
stress experienced by them or others.
Participants also discussed
financial management while attending a competition when they identified the
needs that required funds during a competition.
Last but not least,
participants also learned a little bit of communication skills while taking part
in a competition stressing that there should be a good communication between
manager with the federation, the local organizing committee, athletes and
coaches.
